“Who I Want With Me”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “When I Make You Smile”)
Who I want with me as I go
will have eyes that shine but never see
and what I want is to take it slow
and give up on things that’ll never be
and when I finally give up on you
I’ll see roads that could take me far from here
and where I end up we’ll never know
but the trail I leave will be very clear
’cause I never had any idea what I want
and I probably didn’t know when I had it
and I never had any idea where to look
but there’s always been no doubt about it
who I want with me
Who I want with me if I stay
will have hands that touch but never feel
and what I want is another day
just to hold those hands and to know its real
and why I ask myself every night
can’t I see those roads that’ll leave for sure
and how even in the bright daylight
even interstates lead me back to her
“What I Am”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “When I Make You Smile”)
You’ll see her walking down these crowded streets each day
with a look of sadness in her eyes as she makes her way
and you’ll hear me on these crowded streets with this guitar
strummin’ to a lonely beat as I watch her from afar
What I Am’s a man who sits alone strummin this lonely beat
What I Am’s a man who watches you through a crowded street
What I Am
She never seems to hear me playin’ as she walks on by
I just watch her walk away with the morning sun in my eye
As the evening shadows fill the streets she’ll return alone
to spend another lonely night in that place she calls her home
What I Am’s a man who sits alone strummin’ this lonely beat
What I Am’s a man who watches you through a crowded street
What I Am’s a man who could help you through a night like this
What I Am’s a man who could wake you with a stolen kiss
What I Am
Did our eyes meet for a second as the sun passed through the clouds?
Was she looking for the music, or was it something in the crowds?
In the stillness of the night she might hear every word I play,
but she won’t know whom I’m singing for if I look the other way
but that’s what I am
If I could play a tune that would make her look this way,
maybe I could sing for her the words I couldn’t say
I’d sing her a love song about two people who should meet
and find their love right there in the middle of a crowded street
What I Am’s a man who sits alone strummin’ this lonely beat
What I Am’s a man who watches you through a crowded street
What I Am’s a man who could help you through a night like this
What I Am’s a man who could wake you with a stolen kiss
What I Am
What I Am
What I Am
“When I Make You Smile”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “When I Make You Smile”)
I took the longer way home today
maybe a wrong turn along the way
but I made it home,
yea I made it home
I took a wild ride across her world
brought a new smile to a lonely girl
then I made her cry,
and I dont know why
now I’m searching for new ways to make it feel right
lost like a star on a stormy night
passing my time here without any plan
certain to make you a stronger man
saving my breath ’till I walk that last mile
waiting this long just to see your face
when I make you smile
I spent my younger years flying high
always so sure I could touch the sky
but I never did,
and I never will
I always do things the harder way
it made me the person I am today
and I wouldn’t change,
no I’ll never change
“Where I Feel The Eyes Upon Me”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “When I Make You Smile”)
Where I feel the eyes upon me
I look out along the sea
and while I fight to save the moment
holding out for what could be
You know I struggle as I stand,
I struggle but they push me down this road they paved for me
But I’ve seen waves on every seashore
and I wake to hear the sound
of the next one as it crashes in
leaving nothing on the ground,
except a castle in the sand,
just a castle where I feel the eyes upon me
Take my hand I’ll lead you from the stormy sea to the place I hide
We’ll be young again,
and I’ll be free
as we watch our worlds collide
Take my hand I’ll lead you from the stormy sea to the place I hide
We’ll be young again,
and I’ll be free
and the skies will open wide
Where I feel the eyes upon me
as I fight to stand my ground
wishing for the day a girl like you
would choose to hang around
’till the tides roll out to sea
leaving castles in the sand
and leaving you and me
So if I feel your eyes upon me
as I look out on the sea
All we’ll need is just this moment
borrowed from eternity
We’ll build a castle in the sand
just a castle where
I’ll feel your eyes upon me
“Why I Like Her Around”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “When I Make You Smile”)
She calls from a pay phone
just killing some time
She dares me to find her
while she hangs on the line
so I hop in my car
driving ’round ’round ’round
but the girl on the line’s
nowhere to be found
She waits on my doorstep
when I finally get home
She laughs when I tell her
to just leave me alone
She lays in the grass,
and pulls me down down down
and I can’t recall why I like her around
We walk on a hillside
with the wind in her hair
She looks to the mountains
like I’m not even there
like stars in the night,
falling down down down
and I can’t recall why I like her around
She walks in a garden
with the spring in the air
There’s just something about her
even when she’s not there
So I watch from afar, gazing down down down
and I seem to recall why I like her around
“How I Feel”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “When I Make You Smile”)
I feel the heat rising off the street
I feel the ground shaking under my feet
I watch her walk, and I watch her talk
I feel my body shaking right in my seat
See, I can tell by the way she stands
that she’d be worth her whole list of demands
She said it fast, boy I know your kind
you watch my body but you don’t see my mind
I said baby please, as I watched her breath
you know you’re cute but girl you got to unwind
’cause I can tell by the look in your eyes
that this attitude is no big surprise
So we can dine and see movies
or take a walk in the park
if you would just let me have
my own way in the dark
you got a problem with that
well girl you’ll just have to deal
’cause when the morning arrives . . .
this is how I feel
I get a rise from those “dreamy eyes”
I hold her waist and hope she doesn’t get wise
to my thoughts, and my bad desires
I keep them hidden in the perfect disguise
For she might tell by the things I say
how hard I’m trying just to get my way
I feel the heat, when she’s by my side
she’s in the drivers seat but I wish she’d just ride
I’m in my place, when she’s “in” my face
she makes the rules and I just got to abide
but I can tell by the way she sits
how much I love her little “sass and her wits”
so we can talk and be friends
and plan our future all day
if you would just send a piece of
that body my way
you got a problem with that
well girl you’ll just have to deal
’cause in the heat of the day . . .
this is how I feel
We can grow and communicate
and share our feelings all day
if you would just give your man
another roll in the . . .
Hey I could even sit through
an opera or some awful ballet
if you would just tell me
some of that love’s on its way
you got a problem with that
well girl you’ll just have to deal
’cause no matter what I say . . .
this is how I feel
“Storm In The Mirror”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “The Dreams I Left Behind”)
The sound of your voice promised to be
a mirror reflecting this side of me
but like all promises this one must break
and I’m left here with one moment to take
away a lifetime of high hopes and dreams
our very future ripped at the seams
so don’t go trying to make it all right
’cause there’s a storm in the mirror tonight
Now I’m that kind who loves from the start
at first sight you stole me and my heart
It only took you a short while to say,
you love me too but not in that way
but for one summer in ’82
it was just me and it was just you
you can’t tell me that it wasn’t right
’cause there’s a storm in the mirror tonight
I know it should have rang a bell
when they sang, “only time will tell”
well time has told me a thing or two
and one of them is I won’t be with you
but still my heart it bleeds for you
and all those dreams that could have come true
and I sure hope you’re doing all right
’cause there’s a storm in the mirror tonight
“Right Out Of My Mind”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “The Dreams I Left Behind”)
Down by the water, we walk together
I’ve got this feeling; it’s now or never
This feeling drives me, right out of my mind
Up by the city, we live together
She makes me feel like, we’ll last forever
This feeling drives me, right out of my mind
I lay in the evening, thoughts rush through my head
But I can’t begin to doubt when, she comes in to bed
When we’re together, boy it’s forever
But when it’s over, it’s even better
You know she drives me, right out of my mind
I wake in the morning, with an ache in my heart
I know I could never leave her, and that’s a good start
She says she loves me, sometimes she hates me
But bottom line is, she’d never trade me
And that just drives me, right out of my mind
You know she drives me, right out of my mind
“Cutie’s Pub”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “The Dreams I Left Behind”)
Old man mentioned that forgotten street
where as young boys we would come and meet
we’d run away from home to be with others like our own
and spend the night at Cutie’s Pub
Girls they come and girls they always go
and with my girls I would always go
for laughter and a song
and something warm to bring along
a small affair at Cuties Pub
But time has closed the doors at Cutie’s place
and stole from me the memory of your face
Now the names and faces all are new
and reminders of old times are few
but now and then my mind
drifts to another place and time
to be with fragments of some
old forgotten friends
to run away from now
to be with others who somehow
left their mark at Cutie’s Pub
“Song In My Heart”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “The Dreams I Left Behind”)
When did you come along,
and fill my heart with this song?
Was it always this magical?
Did it always feel so fine?
Were you with me forever?
Were you always on my mind?
When did you come along?
And baby would it be wrong,
if I can’t for the life of me
recall one single place or time,
when you weren’t in the rhythm,
when you weren’t in every rhyme?
’cause the song in my heart is you
and it plays with every beat
yea the song in my heart is you
and it makes my life complete
‘said the song in my heart is you
and I play it day and night
you’re the song in my heart
and that makes everything alright
when did you come along?
and baby would it be wrong,
if I asked you to stay awhile,
would that be misunderstood?
would you tell me you love me
or keep quiet like I should?
but I’ve waited too long
and like the words of a song
must be sang when the time is right
or the whole thing ends up wrong.
now I feel is the right time
to sing what you’ve known all along.
“Lady Of The Night”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “The Dreams I Left Behind”)
Her face was in the shadows
but her eyes could see the light
still I saw nothing coming when
she glanced at me that night
It’s not what I was looking for
I didnt have a clue
but once she had a hold on me
there was nothing I could do
and even though my heart and days
belong to someone else
when it’s the night
she’s what’s right
and you know that she will always be my
lady of the night
I can’t recall a payment
but I won’t forget the deal
no woman of the day could ever
have the same appeal
her eyes as dark as nighttime
and her body soft as dawn
just give me one more hour
before the daylight comes along
’cause even when the sun is bright
I long for that dark place
forget the day
say youll stay
’cause you know that you will always be my
lady of the night
but now all innocence is gone
as nights turn into years
and every single heartbeat fills
with passion, love and tears
I wish that we could fly away
and save our souls tonight
but this is real
how I feel
and you know that you will always be my
lady of the night
“Lucky Sandals”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “The Dreams I Left Behind”)
When I feel like I’m tired of real life, I
grab my sandals, my lucky sandals, and
if you feel it too, then I want to be with you, so,
take my hand and we’ll hit the sand, then we’ll
take a walk there, along the beach now,
where all those problems are out of reach now . . .
In the distance I see a Ferris wheel, it
keeps on turning like people learning, they
make the same mistakes, however long it takes,
but in the end they’ll say it doesn’t matter anyway,
but we’ll keep walking, along this beach now,
where all those people are out of reach now
I keep on dreaming about the beach now,
where all your worries are out of reach now
Look behind you, and see how far we’ve come,
then when you look at me you’ll
see your destiny, so
let’s just sit a while, before we walk another mile, then
hold my hand here and feel the sand here, ’cause
the boardwalk looks like a million candles and
I just kicked off my lucky sandals . . .
“The Bridge”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “The Dreams I Left Behind”)
Coming over the bridge that night
there was a stranger in the car I was driving
he played guitar and he wore black boots
but there’s a message in the song he was hiding
I thought of ways I could make him laugh
But all I got was a wave of emotion
I think he lost a love long ago
on an evening like this down by the ocean
and when I think of what it must have been like
to kiss your woman in the pouring rain
to hold her hand and swear you’ll never let go
and then to find out it was all in vain
I think he figured twenty years would be enough
to mend the pieces of a broken heart
and if he came back to the place where it ended
he could somehow make another start
but as we made it across the bridge
we felt the wind blow and it started to rain
and I looked up and I saw his face
and I watched it bring back all that pain
and I remember what it must have been like
to love a woman when you’re just seventeen
to kiss her body with the waves crashing in
and then to find out it was only a dream
“Drifters”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “The Dreams I Left Behind”)
You and I are drifters and we’re going down this track
the way out of that mess we left behind
and though we both know deep inside we’re never going back
we don’t know what it is we hope to find
the rain keeps pouring faster and our train it never comes
we never get to take that easy ride
the world is cruel my rambling friend
and sometimes so are we
but we both know the mission must be done
so take my hand and run with me
together we will see
without our dreams those tracks won’t see the sun
don’t understand the reason and perhaps we’ll never know
but somewhere back our tracks became as one
and I don’t know from where you came
or how far you will go
today at least we’re seeking the same sun
and when I hear that whistle blow you say it isn’t so
I turn my head to see that you are right
but I’m the one who keeps the train from being out of mind
even if it may be out of sight
“Someone Else’s Song”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “The Dreams I Left Behind”)
in a moment you may feel there’s
nothing left to say
but I’ve got something here for you
that no one would believe
they’d say they heard it all before
but never quite this way,
by now you’re probably wondering
what I’ve got here up my sleeve
someone else’s song was all I had until today
but someone else’s song can’t tell
the things I’m here to say
when I hear those songs of love I
think they could be true
but no one ever took the time
to sing them just for you
and when I hear those words of love I
think they may have lied
’cause no one ever mentioned
how you make me feel inside
come a little closer now and
hear the words I play
listen to the music that I
wrote for you today
we won’t forget those other songs
that helped us make it through
but now the world has one more and
it’s written just for you
“The Dreams I Left Behind”
Words and Music by James Somers
(From the album “The Dreams I Left Behind”)
ask me what I’m thinking of right now
and I’ll think of words to say,
and tell me what you’re feeling at this moment
I’ll think of words to say
but when I feel the raindrops fall,
or feel the sunshine on my face,
or when the gentle breeze begins to blow,
I’m swept off to another place
tell me that you need someone to hold you
and I’ll hold you in that way,
and tell me all the dreams that you’ve been hiding
they’ll all come true, someday
but underneath a starry sky
don’t look into my eyes,
’cause I’ll think of words to tell you why,
but there’s no way to disguise
the dreams I left behind
the dreams I left behind
ask me how I like our life together
I’ll think of words to say,
and let me hear you talk about forever
I’m with you all the way
but as the leaves begin to fall
ask me how I feel inside,
and I’ll think of words to tell it all,
and those words will surely hide
the dreams I left behind
the dreams I left behind
